Patrick Reichelt, the 36-year-old veteran of the Philippine national football team, has officially announced his retirement from international duty after more than 13 years of dedicated service. The announcement came just hours after the Philippines defeated Indonesia 1-0 to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
Taking to his personal Instagram account, Reichelt revealed his decision, citing family commitments as the primary reason. His wife is due to give birth to their first child, and he expressed his desire to prioritize his growing family during this pivotal moment in his life.
“With a very heavy heart, I’m leaving the camp today after our successful semi-final qualification,” Reichelt wrote. “This is a decision I discussed with the management and coaching staff beforehand, and I’m grateful for their full support.”
Reflecting on his career, he added, “Yesterday’s game marked my last match wearing the Philippines football jersey. This decision was never going to be easy, but I always knew the day would come. For nearly 13 years, this team has been my family. I owe so much of my life to this experience.”
Reichelt’s message resonated deeply with fans and teammates alike, as he recounted the cherished moments he spent with the team, from celebrating milestones to enduring challenges like quarantines together.
“Representing the Philippines as a national team player has been the greatest honor of my professional career,” he said. “I hope, along the way, I was able to inspire fans, friends, and especially my teammates to understand what it truly means to represent this amazing team and the people of our country. I will treasure this journey and its memories forever.”
Reichelt’s contributions to Philippine football are undeniable. Over his illustrious career, he became one of the most recognizable faces in the national team, known for his leadership, work ethic, and ability to deliver in critical moments.
His departure marks the end of an era for Philippine football, as Reichelt has been a constant figure in the Azkals’ rise on the international stage. He played pivotal roles in the team’s campaigns across multiple tournaments, becoming a fan favorite and a role model for younger players.
In his farewell, Reichelt made it clear that this decision, though bittersweet, was made out of love for his family. “My wife and I are expecting our first child in just a few days, and it’s time for me to fly home and give my undivided attention to our growing family. As this beautiful new chapter begins in our lives, another comes to an end.”
He has since returned to his hometown in Germany and will not feature in the semi-final clash against Thailand.
While Reichelt’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, the Azkals will aim to build on their momentum as they face Thailand in the semi-finals. His retirement serves as both a moment of reflection and a rallying point for the team to honor his legacy by pushing for success in the tournament.
As Reichelt steps away from international football, his words, “I’ll see you around Philippines football,” hint at a potential future involvement in the sport, perhaps in a mentorship or ambassadorial role.
