Malaysia national team clinched its first trophy after 14 years after beating Lebanon national team scoring 1-0 in the Pestabola Merdeka 2024 final at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
The match saw Malaysia making six changes from their previous game against the Philippines, resulting in a more composed and dominant performance. Romel Morales, a naturalized player, scored the decisive goal in the 33rd minute with a close-range shot that Lebanon’s goalkeeper, Mehdi Khalil, could not stop.
In the second half, the introduction of young sensation Arif Aiman Hanapi energized Malaysia’s attack. He came close to doubling the lead in the 52nd minute but was denied by Khalil.
Lebanon faced a setback when their defender Khalil Khamis received a red card in the 78th minute after fouling Arif Aiman, reducing Lebanon to 10 men. Despite the advantage, Malaysia couldn’t add to their tally, but Morales’ goal proved enough to secure the win.
This victory marks a significant achievement for the Malayan Tigers, who had been waiting for a title since 2013.
This triumph is a sweet redemption for Malaysia, who lost to Tajikistan in last year’s final when Vicente was an assistant coach. The success will also boost Malaysia’s FIFA ranking points.
