Penang FC’s hopes of starting their Liga Super Malaysia 2025/26 campaign with a home victory were dashed as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to a clinical Terengganu FC at Stadium Bandaraya, Pulau Pinang.
The match began evenly, but the visitors quickly gained momentum, pressing aggressively from the 7th minute in search of an early goal. Penang’s goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid was kept busy, denying efforts from Kevin Mabella and Akhyar Rashid to keep the score level at the break.
Terengganu’s breakthrough came in the 50th minute through an unlikely source — right-back Azam Azmi Murad. After receiving a well-placed pass from Safwan Mazlan, Azam unleashed a low, powerful strike from the right edge of the penalty box, beating Khairulazhan at his near post.
Just five minutes later, Brazilian import Gabriel “Gabi” Silva Costa doubled the lead. Displaying sharp movement in the box, Gabi found space in front of goal and fired home despite pressure from Penang’s Mohd Akmal Zahir.
Penang, backed by 4,809 home supporters, fought to pull one back through Adib Ra’op, Dylan Wenzel-Halls, and Tchetche Kipre, but their efforts lacked the finishing touch.
Substitute Khalai’f Naskam sealed the win late on, capitalising on a chaotic moment in the Penang defence to slot home and secure all three points for Badrul Afzan Razali’s men.
The result marks a strong start for Terengganu FC, while Penang will be left searching for answers ahead of their next league fixture.
