The road to the 2026 World Cup has hit an unprecedented roadblock for the Iraq National Team. Just weeks away from a crucial intercontinental playoff clash, major off-pitch crises are threatening to derail their World Cup dreams entirely.
The Iraqi National Team management officially confirmed in a statement dated March 3rd that FIFA has scheduled their 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoff match. Is slated to take place in Monterrey, Mexico, on March 31st. However, getting the squad to North America is quickly turning into a logistical nightmare.
According to the official release, recent security developments in the Middle East have severely impacted the team’s travel capabilities. The management highlighted two critical issues currently crippling their preparations:
Due to widespread airspace closures, head coach Graham Arnold is currently trapped in the United Arab Emirates and is completely unable to leave.
Furthermore, several embassies remain closed at the present time. This unprecedented shutdown is preventing multiple professional players, technical staff, and medical team members from obtaining their essential entry visas to Mexico.
The Iraq national team management team clarified that they are not facing this alone. They are continuing to communicate closely with FIFA to figure out arrangements for their participation in light of these hurdles. Both FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) are reportedly “fully aware” of every development regarding the team’s precarious situation.
In a concluding message to their loyal supporters, the management offered assurance that they remain in constant contact with FIFA and the AFC, who are closely keeping tabs on the unfolding situation.
