Canada head coach Jesse Marsch paid an emotional tribute to his players and coaching staff after they secured a historic place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, describing the entire squad as “heroes of Canada” following Sunday’s dramatic victory over South Africa.
The North American side booked their place in the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history after edging South Africa 1-0, with Steven Eustáquio’s stoppage-time winner sending the Canadian camp into celebration.
Speaking to his players moments after the final whistle, the former Leeds United manager delivered an inspiring message that reflected the significance of the achievement.
“You are all heroes of Canada. The future of this sport in this country is becoming bigger because of you,” Marsch told his squad.
When asked about his passionate speech, Marsch explained that he wanted every member of the Canadian delegation to understand the lasting impact of their accomplishment on football in Canada.
The American coach admitted he wished the milestone could have been celebrated on home soil in front of Canadian supporters, but insisted the achievement was no less meaningful.
“After the match, it’s difficult to stay together because everyone is pulled in different directions for media duties. Sometimes you don’t get the chance to truly appreciate what you’ve just accomplished unless you stop and say it immediately.
“I wanted the players to understand how important this moment is for football in our country.
“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t achieve this in Vancouver in front of our fans, but today’s performance showed the character, quality, mentality and unity of this team.”
Canada’s qualification marks a landmark achievement for the co-host nation, who have reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
The victory also reinforces the progress made under Marsch, whose side has displayed resilience, tactical discipline and growing confidence throughout the tournament.
After advancing from the group stage, Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16, with another chapter of history waiting to be written.
Regardless of the outcome, Sunday’s emotional triumph has already become one of the defining moments in Canadian football history, with Marsch believing his players have inspired the next generation and elevated the sport’s profile across the country.
