The Iraq Football Association (IFA) has formally requested that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) relocate the Group G fixtures of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2025 Qualifiers from Cambodia, citing escalating security concerns stemming from ongoing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
Group G, which comprises Iraq, Cambodia, Oman, and Pakistan, is currently scheduled to be held in Cambodia from 1 to 9 September 2025. However, in light of the regional instability, the IFA has proposed Basra, Iraq, as a suitable alternative host city.
In a statement, an IFA official emphasized the urgency and rationale behind the request:
“This decision was made in response to the unstable situation between Cambodia and Thailand. Our initial preparation plan included a training camp in Thailand due to its geographical proximity to Cambodia. However, given the current circumstances, we believe it is in the best interest of all participating teams to move the qualifiers to a safer and more stable environment.”
The IFA also highlighted Basra’s preparedness and capability to host international matches, noting its advanced technical infrastructure and experience in organizing major football events.
The AFC has yet to respond publicly to the proposal, but a decision is expected soon given the upcoming September kickoff.
