Johor Darul Ta’zim has officially strengthened their attacking lineup with the signing of Spanish striker Jonathan Viera.
The former Valencia and Las Palmas forward was unveiled through the club’s Johor Southern Tigers platform, marking a high-profile acquisition for the reigning Malaysia Super League champions.
“The wait is over! Jonathan Viera has arrived! Welcome to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT)!” read the club’s statement, signaling the excitement surrounding his arrival.
Viera, renowned for his creativity and playmaking prowess, previously played for Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates before departing in September 2024. His career highlights include successful stints at Las Palmas and Valencia in Spain, as well as a notable period at Chinese club Beijing Guoan.
The 34-year-old becomes JDT’s second Spanish signing for the new year, following the arrival of seasoned center-back Alvaro Gonzalez. Both players are expected to play pivotal roles in strengthening the Southern Tigers’ campaign.
Viera and Gonzalez will be key assets for coach Hector Bidoglio as JDT prepares for the crucial final two matches of the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) 2024/25 season.
Currently sitting sixth in the ACLE Eastern League with eight points, JDT remains in contention for a spot in the Round of 16. The next challenge comes on February 11, when the Southern Tigers face the 2023/24 AFC Cup champions, Central Coast Mariners.
