Malaysian badminton players performed stellar at the 2025 India Open, securing five spots in the tournament’s semi-finals.
The matches, held at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, New Delhi, showcased the nation’s growing dominance in the sport.
The husband-and-wife mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, were the first to book their spot in the semi-finals. They eased past Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang in straight sets, with a commanding 21-11, 21-15 victory.
Following their lead, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei overcame Thai opponents Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat with a confident 21-16, 21-17 win, solidifying Malaysia’s presence in the mixed doubles category.
In the women’s doubles, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah delivered a stunning performance by defeating last week’s Malaysian Open champions, Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto. Their hard-fought 21-18, 21-19 victory demonstrated their determination and skill.
The men’s doubles saw equally impressive results, with two Malaysian pairs advancing. Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik displayed their usual consistency by defeating Thailand’s Kittinupong Kedren and Dechapol Puavaranukroh 21-18, 21-18. Meanwhile, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani dominated Chinese Taipei’s Lee Fang-Chih and Lee Fang-Jen in straight sets, 21-11, 21-17.
This achievement marks a step up from Malaysia’s performance at the recent Malaysian Open, where only three pairs advanced to the semi-finals. The consistency and depth shown by the players indicate a bright future for Malaysian badminton on the international stage.
