Eyra Hazali, the wife of Malaysian goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli, has responded to intense online criticism directed at her husband following Malaysia’s narrow 0-1 defeat to Thailand in the third group stage match of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 on Saturday.
In the game held at Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium, the only goal came in the 57th minute after Haziq made a costly error. Under pressure from Thai forward Suphanat Muenta, Haziq failed to clear the ball effectively, allowing Suphanat to set up teammate Patrik Gustavsson for a calm finish.
The mistake triggered an outpouring of disappointment from Malaysian fans on social media, with some directing personal insults at Haziq, even involving his family members.
Eyra Hazali, a well-known actress, addressed the harsh criticism in an emotional Instagram story. She expressed her dismay over comments that went beyond criticism of Haziq’s performance, including prayers for him to be paralyzed and insults involving their children.
“We can accept the insults you throw at us, but the insults that go as far as praying for my husband to be paralyzed and involving our children are extreme,” Eyra wrote.
Despite the negativity, Eyra remained supportive of her husband and took the high road by offering prayers for those who made such hurtful remarks.
“I pray that these prayers do not return to you and your family. Haziq will always have our support,” she added, urging Malaysians to stand behind the goalkeeper as he continues to fight for the national team.
The criticism highlights the immense pressure faced by footballers representing the national squad. While mistakes are part of the game, personal attacks—especially those involving families—cross the line.
