Johor Darul Ta’zim are bracing for a defining moment in Asian football after learning their potential opponents in the knockout phase of the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26.

Following the official draw, the Malaysian giants could face either defending champions Al Ahli Saudi or Qatar’s powerhouse Al Duhail—a daunting yet exciting prospect for the Southern Tigers.

Speaking after the draw, JDT Chief Operating Officer and Technical Director Alistair Edwards welcomed the challenge, highlighting the significance of competing against Asia’s elite.

“At this stage of the competition, every team is going to be very tough. But we’re excited. Playing against clubs of this stature is great for Johor and for Malaysian football.”

For JDT, this is more than just another tie—it’s a statement of progress. A club from Malaysia standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Asia’s finest reflects years of strategic growth and ambition.

Should JDT progress, an even tougher route awaits, with more continental heavyweights looming in the later stages. But Edwards insists the focus remains grounded.

“It’s step by step for us. These are iconic teams in Asian football. We’re proud to represent Johor and Malaysia at this level.”

He also acknowledged the strong foundation behind the club’s rise, crediting leadership and structure as key pillars.

“We’ve assembled a fantastic team, with a great structure and strong leadership. You never know—we can do very well.”

One of the biggest hurdles for JDT will be adapting to unfamiliar conditions, with matches set to be played in Jeddah—a shift from their usual East Region campaigns.

“It’s the unknown. We’re used to the East region—Japan, Thailand—but now it’s a different environment, different styles of play. We need to adapt quickly.”

Travel demands, climate, and tactical variations are all factors the coaching staff must address in the coming weeks.

Despite limited direct exposure to potential opponents, Edwards revealed that JDT’s meticulous planning culture has them well-prepared.

“We’ve already studied all possible opponents. Our analysis team has gathered data and match recordings. Now that the draw is clearer, we can focus specifically and fine-tune our approach.”

This level of preparation has been a hallmark of JDT’s dominance domestically—and now, it will be tested on the continental stage.

As JDT prepare to take on Asia’s elite, the stakes go beyond club success. This is a chance to elevate Malaysian football’s reputation on the biggest stage.

Facing either Al Ahli Saudi FC or Al Duhail SC, the Southern Tigers are stepping into uncharted territory—but with belief, structure, and ambition firmly in place.
