Malaysia Men’s Badminton national team ending at 2nd place of Group D after losing to Denmark Men’s Badminton national team 2-3 pairs in the Thomas Cup 2024 Group stage, Group D matchday 3 at Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium, Chengdu.
Denmark, won the first match point through its first individual, Viktor Axelsen who beat Lee Zii Jia 21-16, 24-22.
Likewise, the country’s squad managed to tie the score at 1-1 thanks to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik coming back to beat Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 17-21, 21-17, 21-16 in one hour and three minutes.
Denmark was back in front through their second singles, Anders Antonsen who easily beat Leong Jun Hao 21-14, 21-10 in 41 minutes.
The country’s team was clearly at their best when the Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani pair again tied the score at 2-2 after beating Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 23-21, 22-20 in 50 minutes.
The country’s third individual player, Justin Hoh, who took part in the deciding action, was seen as having succeeded in ‘worrying’ his opponent who is ranked 26th in the world, Rasmus Gemke, thereby dragging the match into the deciding set.
Gemke won 21-13 over Justin, who is ranked 233rd in the world, in the first set, but the 20-year-old country representative calmed down to record a 21-19 win in the second set before being forced to lose in the third set 13-21.
Towards the quarter-finals, Malaysia, who emerged as the runner-up in Group D, will face off against the winners of Groups A, B or C through a draw that will be held tomorrow.
