Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has imposed a three-match suspension and a fine of USD 2,000 (RM9,006) on Theerathon Bunmathan, following an incident in the AFC Champions League Elite 2024/25 League Stage(East Zone) between Johor Darul Ta’Zim vs Buriram United on 3 December 2024.
The Buriram United captain received a direct red card for an unsportsmanlike act of squeezing the testicles of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) star player Arif Aiman.
Theerathon’s suspension includes the initial one-match ban for the red card, plus two additional matches due to the severity of the misconduct. As a result, the experienced Thai defender will be sidelined for the remainder of the group stage and will only be eligible to return if Buriram United progresses to the Round of 16 in the AFC Champions League (ACL).
The ban is a significant blow for Buriram United, as Theerathon is a key figure in their defense and leadership on the field. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the team navigates crucial matches in the ACL Elite competition.
In addition to Theerathon’s punishment, Buriram United was fined USD 1,000(RM4,503) for violating the Official Countdown protocol, which caused a delay in the start of the match.
