Theerathon Bunmathan, Buriram United’s player has issued a public apology following his controversial actions towards Johor Darul Ta’Zim star Arif Aiman Hanapi during their intense Asian Champions League Elite (ACLE) Group A encounter at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Tuesday.
The experienced Thai defender’s lapse in judgment resulted in a red card after the referee consulted the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the 44th minute, leaving Buriram a man down for much of the match.
Reflecting on the incident, Theerathon expressed deep remorse:
“Follow the incident that happened in the last match
I want to apologize for my inappropriate actions. I feel sorry and disappointed for my actions. I can’t control my emotions. It shouldn’t have happened.
I apologize to the chairman of Buriram United Club
I apologize to the coach, my teammates, and the fans who love me
I want to apologize, I don’t know what words to say more than sorry, I feel very guilty for this act this time, it is an act that should not be an example for the youth, I ask that the children who have me as an example take my mistake as a lesson And take only what is useful from me to use to benefit”
Theerathon’s actions not only marred his own performance but also threatened to derail Buriram’s efforts in a tightly contested match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Buriram United managed to hold JDT to a 0-0 draw, a result that saw both teams conclude their Group A campaigns with eight points from six matches. The draw underscored the resilience of Buriram’s defense and JDT’s inability to capitalize on their advantage.
The outcome leaves both teams level on points, adding tension as the group standings and potential advancement scenarios are finalized.
