Thai League 2 will operate with a reduced VAR schedule during the 2026/27 season, with the technology set to be used only in the final five matches of the campaign and the play-offs, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has confirmed.
The decision comes as FAT continues to manage the financial burden left by previous debts amounting to 360 million baht(RM44.21 million), with more than 200 million baht(RM24.56 million) still remaining to be repaid through monthly instalments.
FAT said the reduction in VAR coverage was necessary to lower competition-related expenses and ensure the association can continue organising all of its competitions, including the men’s and women’s professional leagues.
While Thai League 2 will see limited VAR usage, FAT confirmed that Thai League 1 will continue to use VAR in every match, every week, until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The full VAR Cross Hair 3D system will also remain in operation, following its use during the 2025/26 campaign.
The contrasting VAR schedules mean that Thai League 1 will retain full video-assisted officiating throughout the season, while Thai League 2 clubs will have to wait until the closing stages of the competition and the play-offs for VAR support.
