Johor Darul Ta'zim opened their Shopee Cup 2026/27 Group B campaign in emphatic style, beating Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng (PKR Svay Rieng) 6-0 at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. The result puts the Southern Tigers top of the group with a large goal difference after the first round.

JDT drew 2-2 with the Cambodian club in last season's Shopee Cup group stage, and Xisco Muñoz's side were determined not to repeat that result.

Muñoz put his faith in Arif Aiman Hanapi, Jairo da Silva and Marcos Guilherme to break through. Svay Rieng head coach Matt McConkey picked Kwame Peprah as his main attacking threat.

JDT found it hard to break through early on. McConkey set his side up in a 4-1-4-1 to restrict the hosts' attack, and the visitors defended compactly. JDT created a run of chances, but Jairo could not finish them.

The breakthrough came in the 39th minute, when Arif Aiman opened the scoring. That goal kept JDT 1-0 ahead until half-time.

McConkey made two changes after the break, bringing on Tiago Alves and Sophal Dimong to tighten his side's shape. It made little difference. JDT doubled their lead six minutes into the second half. Jairo created the chance, and Guilherme finished past goalkeeper Dara Vireak.

Kevin Medina made it 3-0 in the 61st minute. Nine minutes later, Iranian striker Shahab Zahedi scored JDT's fourth.

The most eye-catching contribution came from JDT's young forward Daniesh Amirruddin. He replaced Arif Aiman and scored the fifth in the 78th minute, finishing a chance that fell to him. Eight minutes later, he struck again to complete the 6-0 scoreline.

It is another fast start to Daniesh's senior career. The Under-21 forward scored twice on his debut against UM-Damansara United in the FA Cup, and he now has a second senior brace. His goals also match the direction of JDT's new squad policy, announced by chief executive Luis Garcia, which gives junior and reserve players regular chances in the Malaysia Cup and Shopee Cup.

Muñoz said before the match that a clean sheet was the main priority, along with balance between attack and defence. Defender Shane Lowry had also said he would gladly give up the goal he scored against Svay Rieng last season in return for a shutout and a win. The 6-0 scoreline gave JDT both.

The win gives JDT a strong platform in Group B, with a goal difference that could prove valuable as the group stage progresses. The club will now turn to the rest of a crowded fixture schedule, in which Muñoz has said rotation will be needed across several competitions.
