Kuala Lumpur City need to win in the last match for qualified to semi-final round after losing to Cong An Hanoi, a club from Vietnam scoring 2-3 in the Shopee Cup 2024/25 Group Stage, Group B at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
After suffering three consecutive losses, KL City returned to their home ground looking for redemption against a CAHN team riding high on three straight wins. Fielding experienced players like Paulo Josue and Giancarlo Gallifuoco, the home side hoped to turn their fortunes around, but CAHN, led by Vietnam national team captain Nguyen Quang Hai, proved to be a formidable opponent.
The visitors struck early in the 9th minute, with Quang Hai capitalizing on a precise long ball to fire home from close range, putting CAHN in front. Stunned but not defeated, KL City regrouped and began mounting a comeback.
In the 22nd minute, their efforts bore fruit when Adrijan Rudovic headed in a perfectly placed corner kick to level the score. Just nine minutes later, team captain Paulo Josue showcased his leadership and skill, heading in a cross from Jovan Motika to give KL City a 2-1 lead before halftime.
The second half saw CAHN turn the tide. Viet Anh equalized for the visitors in the 67th minute with a well-placed header, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
Controversy marred the final moments of the game as KL City’s hopes were dashed when key players Kamal Azizi and Paulo Josue were sent off for allegedly engaging in unsportsmanlike behavior. With a two-player advantage, CAHN capitalized, with Le Van Do scoring the decisive goal late in the match to seal a 3-2 victory.
The defeat leaves KL City in a must-win situation in their final group-stage match against Thai powerhouse Buriram United on February 6. Meanwhile, CAHN will host Borneo FC, looking to maintain their unbeaten run and secure the top spot in Group B.
