Selangor FC are currently awaiting confirmation on whether their reserve squad, Selangor FC II, will be allowed to compete in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) next season, marking a potential historic first for Malaysian football.
The proposal comes after the Malaysian Football League (MFL) announced the abolishment of the MFL Cup for the upcoming 2025/26 season, leaving limited avenues for reserve teams to gain consistent, competitive match exposure.
In response, Selangor FC’s management proactively identified the SPL as a potential platform to ensure regular high-intensity football for their second squad, with the move now pending approval from relevant stakeholders.
According to Selangor FC Technical Committee Chairman, Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar, the club remains optimistic but cautious about the move.
“There’s a high possibility that Selangor 2 will play in the Singapore league, but it’s not easy. There are many processes, channels, and documentation that need to be carefully reviewed,” Shahril told Nadi Arena.
“When asked if anything is confirmed or finalised — the answer is no. If the move doesn’t materialise, there are other options. One of them is entering the A1 Semi-Pro League,” he added.
The move, if approved, would be unprecedented and demonstrate Selangor FC’s commitment to long-term player development by ensuring young talents are exposed to competitive matches outside the domestic structure.
Selangor 2 have been a vital feeder team for the senior squad and recently finished as runners-up in the 2024/25 MFL Cup, collecting 52 points from 24 matches — a testament to the talent pipeline within the club.
