FIFA ASEAN Cup: Thailand Suffer Shock Loss Philippines But Still Final
Thailand suffered a surprise 1-2 defeat to the Philippines in their final FIFA ASEAN CUP 2026 Group B fixture at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung.
The match got off to a delayed start following a 40-minute lightning safety hold, and the Philippines struck almost immediately after kick-off. In just the 3rd minute, Paul Tabinas surged down the flank before cutting the ball back for Bjørn Martin Christensen to slot past Kampon Pathom-akkakul for an early 1-0 lead. Thailand tested Michael Falkesgaard in the 24th minute through a long-range effort from Chaiyaphol Odthon, but the Azkals held firm into half-time.
Following a second weather delay at the break, Thailand made an immediate impact. Half-time substitute Seksan Ratree threaded a precise through-ball to Ikhlas Sanron, who curled a magnificent left-footed equalizer into the far corner in the 55th minute. Thailand pushed for the leader and nearly went ahead in the 64th minute, but Jude Soonsup-Bell's point-blank strike was brilliantly denied by Falkesgaard.
The Philippines made Thailand pay for the missed chance just four minutes later. On a swift 68th-minute counter-attack, Andre Leipold carried the ball forward before picking out Christensen, who smashed home his second of the night to restore the Philippines' 2-1 advantage.
Hudson threw on fresh legs late in the match—introducing Teerasak Poeiphimai, Kakana Khamyok, Nicholas Mickelson, and veteran playmaker Chanathip Songkrasin—but the War Elephants were unable to break down a resolute Azkals defense before the final whistle.
Despite the result, Thailand finish top of Group B on six points to punch their ticket to the championship decider.
Thailand now travel to Jakarta for a high-stakes FIFA ASEAN CUP 2026 Final against hosts Indonesia (World No. 118) at the iconic Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on October 5, 2026, with kick-off set for 9:00 pm.
