AzerbaijanGP: Russell Survives Verstappen Charge to Win

George Russell held off a late-race charge from Max Verstappen to claim his third victory of the 2026 season at a dramatic Azerbaijan Grand Prix, crossing the line just 0.196 seconds clear of the Red Bull driver after a race twice interrupted by the Safety Car and marred by seven retirements, including McLaren's Lando Norris.

Russell claimed pole position with a 1:42.526 lap, comfortably clear of the field, with Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri separated by just one-thousandth of a second in second and third. Isack Hadjar and Norris completed the top five, while Verstappen could only manage eighth on the grid after a scrappy Saturday for Red Bull.

The grid was reshaped by a string of penalties handed down by the stewards. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were both demoted to the back of the field after Aston Martin used additional power unit elements, dropping the pair to 21st and 22nd respectively. Sergio Perez fell three places for impeding another driver, while Carlos Sainz was demoted five places for failing to slow under yellow flags, pushing the Williams driver back to 14th despite a raw lap time that would have placed him inside the top 10. Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, lined up a lowly 16th after failing to post a representative time in qualifying — a result that would prove almost irrelevant by the chequered flag.

Russell made the most of his front-row advantage at the start, controlling the pace at the head of the field while Piastri found himself sandwiched between the two Mercedes and the recovering Red Bulls, fending off Verstappen and Hadjar as Russell steadily built a cushion out front.

The order was thrown into chaos when Alexander Albon ran wide and clipped the wall, triggering the first Safety Car of the afternoon and bunching the field back together. Russell was forced to defend hard at the restart, but any rhythm he found was short-lived: Franco Colapinto locked his brakes moments later, collecting both his own Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly and Norris's McLaren in the process, and forcing a second Safety Car intervention that neutralised the race once again.

With the pack reset for a second time, Verstappen used the restart to launch a sustained assault on the race lead, closing to within striking distance of Russell across the closing laps. The Mercedes driver held his nerve under intense pressure, crossing the line just a tenth of a second ahead to deny Verstappen what would have been his first win of the season and seal Russell's third triumph of the year.

Hadjar completed a strong afternoon for Red Bull, securing third place and a double podium for the team after starting fourth on the grid.

Leclerc came home fourth after slipping two places from his front-row start, while Antonelli produced the drive of the race, capitalising on the chaos ahead of him to surge from 16th on the grid to fifth at the flag — an 11-place recovery that underlined the championship leader's class even on a difficult weekend.

Lewis Hamilton brought his Ferrari home sixth, unchanged from his starting position, ahead of Arvid Lindblad, who gained eight places to beat Esteban Ocon to seventh across the line. Oliver Bearman completed a strong day for Haas in ninth, giving the team its first points since the Monaco Grand Prix with both cars inside the top 10. Sainz rounded out the points in 10th, salvaging a solid result despite his grid penalty.

Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed the points in 11th after a late fight with the recovering Williams cars, with Liam Lawson settling for 12th following contact with his Racing Bulls teammate Lindblad earlier in the race. Piastri endured a miserable afternoon, running in podium contention for long stretches before a late lock-up dropped him to 13th, well outside the points. Perez recovered six places to finish 14th for Cadillac, while Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the classified runners in 15th after being handed a 10-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flag conditions.

Valtteri Bottas crashed into the barriers late in the race and was the final car to fail to finish, joining Albon, Colapinto, Gasly and Norris among the retirements. The Aston Martin pair of Alonso and Stroll also failed to see the chequered flag, both sidelined by separate mechanical issues after starting from the back of the grid.

Russell also claimed the fastest lap of the race, a 1:44.916 on lap 49, as he sealed a complete weekend for Mercedes.
