Cheah Liek Hou, the Malaysian badminton player, fulfilled expectations by delivering Malaysia’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games. Competing in the SU5 category (physical disability), the 36-year-old champion showcased his prowess by defeating Indonesia’s Suryo Nugroho in the final at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.
Liek Hou, an eight-time world champion, secured his victory with a score of 21-13, 21-15 in just 41 minutes, defending the gold medal he previously won at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Entering the match as the tournament’s top seed, he displayed dominance from the start, forcing his opponent into errors and maintaining control throughout both sets.
This triumphant achievement earned Liek Hou a reward of RM1 million under Malaysia’s Sports Victory Prize Scheme (SHAKAM).
