Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, will play for the bronze medal again after losing to No.1 Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang, in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles badminton event at the Olympics 2024 held at Porte de La Chapelle Arena, Paris.
Aaron and Wooi Yik, who had a disappointing final match in Group A last Monday, once again faced the strength of Wei Keng and Chang despite delivering a commendable performance. Both teams started the first set cautiously, with Wei Keng and Chang heating up mid-match. The Chinese pair managed to pull ahead, but Wooi Yik aggressively equalized at the 11th point. However, Wei Keng and Chang regained their lead and closed the first set with a 21-19 victory.
In the second set, Aaron and Wooi Yik, ranked third in the world, capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes to secure a 21-15 win, forcing a decider. The final set was intense, with both teams exchanging points in a thrilling showdown. Ultimately, Wei Keng and Chang showcased their prowess as the world’s top team, concluding the set with a 21-17 win.
Aaron and Wooi Yik now have a chance to match their Tokyo 2020 achievements in the bronze medal match against either the Danish team, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, or the Taiwanese team, Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin, this Sunday.
