Manchester United has officially parted ways with Erik ten Hag after two-and-a-half years, marking the end of a tenure that began with high promise but ultimately fell short.
His final match, a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, leaves United in 14th place in the Premier League, seven points adrift of the top four and an equal distance from the relegation zone.
Appointed in April 2022, Ten Hag delivered United’s first major trophies in six years, winning the EFL Cup in his debut season and the FA Cup last year. He also led United to a strong third-place finish in his first campaign, accumulating 75 points—one of their best league performances since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era. The season included notable wins against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, signaling a potential revival for the club.
However, last season proved challenging for Ten Hag. Key injuries to defenders like Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez weakened United’s defense, leading to 58 goals conceded—their highest in a Premier League season—and a record-breaking nine home defeats across all competitions. Their eighth-place league finish was United’s lowest in Premier League history, and their early exit from the Champions League compounded the disappointment.
The club ended last season on a high, however, securing the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City at Wembley, which secured their place in the UEFA Europa League this season. Despite this success, United’s inconsistent performances continued into the current season, resulting in Ten Hag’s departure.
Earlier this summer, Ten Hag extended his contract until 2026, emphasizing a unified vision for the club. Yet, with the recent setbacks, United has appointed former player Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager while the search for a permanent successor begins.
