Celestino Vietti of Red Bull KTM Ajo claimed a remarkable victory at the Moto2 in PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia 2024, capping off an impressive performance that saw him lead by 1.486 seconds over second-placed Jorge Navarro from the OnlyFans American Racing Team.
This win, Vietti’s third of the season, showcased his consistency and speed as he mastered the challenging conditions in Sepang.
The race saw early drama as Marcos Ramirez, who started strong, was soon overtaken by Vietti at Turn 1. Ai Ogura of MT Helmet MSI made an initial charge, pushing up to second before being overtaken by Ramirez. Vietti then stretched his lead, setting a fierce pace that left the competition trailing until a brief error at Turn 1 brought the pack closer. Navarro took advantage of the race’s high stakes, moving into second on Lap 7, passing Ogura and then overtaking Ramirez, who continued battling for a podium spot with CFMOTO RCB Aspar Team’s Jake Dixon and Izan Guevara.
As the race entered the final laps, Vietti recovered his rhythm, pulling away from Navarro to secure a commanding lead. Dixon, meanwhile, managed to pass Ramirez for third, though a late mistake allowed teammate Guevara to clinch the final podium position, with Dixon finishing fourth.
Further back, Aron Canet of Fantic Racing fought his way up from 13th to an impressive eighth, passing several riders, including Deniz Öncü. In the closing laps, Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) and Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) rounded out the top ten, while Manuel Gonzalez fell back to 11th.
Vietti’s victory solidifies his impressive form this season, as he eyes a strong finish at the season’s finale.
