Selangor FC head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi has called on his players to reflect on their experiences in the AFC Champions League Two as they turn their attention to the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Despite an emphatic 4-0 victory over Dynamic Herb Cebu FC in their final Group H fixture, the Red Giants narrowly missed out on a spot in the tournament’s Round of 16.
Despite the disappointment, Kinoshi emphasized the value of the campaign’s lessons:
“Yes, of course, we didn’t qualify because of Muangthong’s result against Jeonbuk. But this is the reality we face. We must learn from the previous matches, not just about motivation to qualify but about having a deeper motivation to play football.”
Kinoshi stressed the importance of cultivating a strong mindset:
“As players, having motivation is crucial. That is the most important thing. Our focus now shifts from ACL2 to league matches in Malaysia and cup competitions. That is our next target.”
Selangor’s hopes were dashed after Muangthong United defeated Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in Bangkok, earning the Thai side the coveted second-place spot in Group H with 11 points, just one more than Selangor’s tally of 10 points.
Coach Gino Lettieri’s Muangthong side displayed grit to overcome the formidable K-League 1 outfit, leaving Selangor’s valiant effort short of advancing.
Selangor will now turn their attention to the Malaysia Super League, with an upcoming clash against Negeri Sembilan FC on December 9. The Red Giants aim to reclaim second place in the league standings, currently occupied by Sabah FC, who edged Kuching City FC 2-1 on December 4.
Additionally, Selangor will prepare for the MFL Challenge Cup, where they hope to channel their ACL2 experience into domestic success.
