The 2024 MotoGP™ season concluded in electrifying fashion at the Circuit De Barcelona Catalunya in Barcelona, where Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) etched his name into the history books.
A calculated third-place finish secured him the 2024 MotoGP™ World Championship, making him the first Independent Team rider to claim the title in the modern MotoGP™ era.
Despite a stellar performance from Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), who took his 11th Grand Prix victory of the season, Martin’s consistent brilliance across the year sealed the championship in dramatic style.
Bagnaia was unstoppable on the day, leading from the holeshot and never relinquishing his advantage. The Italian’s relentless pace, combined with masterful control, allowed him to fend off a determined challenge from Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™). Marquez shadowed Bagnaia for much of the race but ultimately finished 1.474 seconds behind, claiming a milestone 150th career podium as he prepares for his new journey with Ducati.
Martin, nicknamed the Mart1nator, showed maturity and composure under immense pressure. A strong start saw him initially slot into second before being overtaken by Marquez. From there, he focused on securing the championship rather than risking everything for the race win. With this third-place finish, Martin broke records by claiming his 16th podium of the year, a feat matched only by Bagnaia.
The race wasn’t just about the leaders. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) staged a late charge, overtaking Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) to finish fourth. Espargaro rounded out the top five in his final race as a full-time MotoGP™ rider, delivering a performance filled with determination.
Further back, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) battled fiercely with Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing). Binder emerged sixth, narrowly ahead of his competitors after a hard-fought contest.
Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) and rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) completed the top 10, with Acosta showing flashes of brilliance despite a tough race.
The 2024 MotoGP™ season was one for the ages. Martin’s championship marks a shift in the sport, highlighting the growing competitiveness of Independent Teams. Meanwhile, Bagnaia’s 11 GP wins solidified his reputation as one of the all-time greats, even as he passed the torch to his successor.
As the dust settles, attention now turns to the future. The 2025 season promises a shake-up, with Martin debuting for Aprilia and several other riders embarking on new adventures. But before the action resumes, the Barcelona Test offers the first glimpse of the new machines and lineups.
