John Beasley, Chief Coach of the Malaysian cycling team, has called for understanding and support for Datuk Azizulhasni Awang, who is currently facing a financial dilemma. Beasley emphasized that while Azizulhasni remains physically and mentally capable of competing in the Olympic 2028 (LA28), it is important to allow him the space to pursue his passions, including participating in keirin races in Japan.
“Physically, Azizulhasni’s mentality is capable (of LA2028), but it must be remembered that he has carried state responsibility for 19 years. Everyone must think about this aspect and let him enjoy (another) race for a while,” Beasley said.
Beasley highlighted that Azizulhasni has been under immense pressure over the past decade, which has prevented him from truly enjoying his races. Now, as he contemplates his future, Beasley expressed his full support for Azizulhasni’s desire to participate in keirin races in Japan, which is one of his long-held dreams.
Previously, Azizulhasni had aimed to end Malaysia’s wait for an Olympic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games but faced disappointment after being disqualified in the men’s keirin event. Although he had initially planned for the Paris race to be his last, there are indications that he may reconsider his decision to retire.
Deputy President of the Malaysian Cycling National Federation (PKBM), Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill, also expressed support for Azizulhasni, stating that there would be no pressure on him regarding his career decisions. Amarjit hopes that Azizulhasni might still consider competing in the World Track Championships in Denmark this October.
“I (can) feel the ‘fire’ inside him still burning. He couldn’t show it (in Paris 2024), I really hope he will consider it or take part in the world championships in October,” Amarjit said.
