Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has clarified its stance on the use of foreign referees, stating that teams dissatisfied with local officiating may apply for international referees — but must shoulder all associated costs.
FAM Deputy President Datuk S. Sivasundaram, who also chairs the FAM Referees Committee, emphasized that while the option is available, financial responsibility lies solely with the requesting team.
“If a team is dissatisfied with local referees, they can apply to use foreign referees,” he explained. “However, all expenses, including referee allowances, accommodation, and meals, must be paid by the team.
“The cost of hiring foreign referees is high and must be paid in United States dollars (USD). FAM or the Malaysian Football League (MFL) will not bear these costs,” Sivasundaram added.
Sivasundaram also acknowledged recent criticism from the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ), regarding refereeing standards in the Malaysian League (M League). TMJ proposed establishing an independent refereeing body separate from FAM.
“FAM respects Tunku Ismail’s remarks and appreciates his contributions to Malaysian football. We will carefully consider his idea of an independent refereeing body for the M League,” Sivasundaram assured.
“FAM accepts the criticism with an open heart,” Sivasundaram said, reinforcing the association’s willingness to evolve and improve Malaysian football administration.
