Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) has announced the appointment of Fabio Magrao as its new Technical Director.
The 47-year-old Brazilian coach, whose full name is Fabio Joaquim Maciel Da Silva, officially assumed the role on January 25, as confirmed in a brief statement by FABD.
“We are pleased to announce Fabio Joaquim Maciel Da Silva as our new Technical Director!” FABD shared enthusiastically in their announcement.
Magrao’s appointment is a strategic move to bolster Brunei’s preparations for the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. He will work closely with his fellow countryman, Vinicius Eutropio, who was recently appointed head coach of the Brunei national team, affectionately known as “The Wasps.”
Brunei faces a challenging road in Group B, where they will compete against Bhutan, Yemen, and Lebanon—the runner-up of the 2024 Merdeka Football Tournament. Magrao’s experience will be pivotal in shaping the team’s technical and tactical approach as they aim for a strong showing in the qualifiers.
Fabio Magrao is no stranger to football in Southeast Asia. He previously served as Technical Director for the Football Federation of Timor Leste (FFTL) and coached Timor Leste’s national team. Magrao also boasts an impressive stint in Malaysian football, where he led Kuala Lumpur FA to victory in the Liga Premier Malaysia 2017, earning promotion to the Liga Super Malaysia the following season.
In addition, Magrao has international coaching experience with clubs such as Dibba Al-Hisn in the UAE. His deep understanding of football dynamics in the region and proven leadership capabilities make him an ideal candidate to spearhead Brunei’s football development.
