Diogo Luis Santo, a Brazilian striker, announced his retirement through his personal Instagram at the age of 36 after an expired contract with Johor Darul Ta’Zim.
“It took me some time to think about how to express what I felt at that moment, mainly because I wasn’t sure how to put so many different emotions into one text, or more precisely, how to find the right words to say goodbye to football,” Diogo said in IG.
“Passion, dedication, adrenaline, teamwork and pleasure in playing this sport have been my motivations since my childhood.”
“I had the most beautiful and inspiring trip despite the unforeseen events and some frustrations. A rollercoaster, made up of many victories, but also many falls.”
“I don’t even know where to start to convey my gratitude and thank all the people who have been part of my career, presidents, coaches, without forgetting all the people who work behind the scenes, such as doctors, physiotherapists, wardrobe workers.”
“To the players I had the honor of working with, both as teammates and rivals, thank you very much to the teams I was part of, Clube Pequeninos do Jockey, Portuguesa, Olympiacos, Flamengo, Santos FC, Palmeiras, Buriram United, BG Pathum United and Johor Darul Ta’Zim, thank you for welcoming me and believing in me. Every team I’ve played for has a part of my heart.”
“To my fans and followers, I say that without you, none of this would be possible. Thank you for your energy, passion and dedication.”
“Finally, a special thank you to my family. Your love and patience allowed me to live my dream most beautifully. Thank you for always being by my side in good times and bad!”
“Thank you, football! I say goodbye today as a player, but I’m sure you will always remain present in my life!”
Diogo has played with Johor Darul Ta’Zim 2 times in 2019-2020 and 2023 and played 43 matches in all competitions and 23 goals scored.
