Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie, a Malaysian Mixed double pair ended as runner-up of the VICTOR China Open 2024 Mixed Doubles, at Changzhou Olympic Sports Center, Changzhou.
Soon Huat-Shevon, ranked 12th in the world, fought a tough three-set final against China’s second-seeded pair, Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping, losing 21-16, 14-21, 17-21.
The Malaysian duo, ranked 12th in the world, started strong in the first set, overcoming an early 5-8 deficit to take control and win 21-16. However, in the second set, unforced errors allowed their opponents to gain momentum, resulting in a 14-21 loss and forcing a decider.
In the final set, Soon Huat and Shevon kept it tight, leveling the score at 7-7 before Feng and Huang pulled ahead, eventually sealing the victory 21-17. This defeat dashed the Malaysians’ hopes of becoming the first mixed doubles pair from their country to win a BWF Super 1000 title.
The pair matched the runner-up achievement of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, who were also runners-up in the 2012 China Open. As runners-up, Soon Huat and Shevon earned US$70,000 (RM294,360) in prize money, while the champions took home US$148,000 (RM622,361).
