Malaysia national team defender Dion Cools is officially set to join J1 League club Cerezo Osaka for the second leg of the 2025 season, following confirmation from Buriram United president Newin Chidchob after the Chang FA Cup 2024/25 Final this evening.
The move marks the end of a highly successful stint in Thai football for the 28-year-old, who has been instrumental in Buriram United’s domestic dominance since joining in the second half of the 2022/23 season.
During his time at the northeastern Thai powerhouse, Cools played a pivotal role in helping Buriram United secure: 3x Thai League titles (2022/23, 2023/24, 2024/25), 1x Thai League Cup(2022/23), 1x Thai FA Cup(2022/23), and 1x Shopee Cup (2024/25 season)
Known for his composure, versatility, and tactical awareness, the Belgian-born defender brought defensive stability and international pedigree to the Buriram backline, becoming a fan favorite and a consistent performer under pressure.
Cools’ move to Cerezo Osaka, a club with growing ambitions in the J.League, marks a significant step forward in his career. It also reflects the rising reputation of Malaysian players abroad, especially in high-level Asian leagues.
