Terengganu FC head coach Badrul Afzan has called on his players to focus on striking early and maintaining defensive discipline as they prepare to face Indonesian powerhouse PSM Makassar in the 4th round of the Shopee Cup.
The crucial match is set to take place at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium on Wednesday, January 22, with kick-off at 9 p.m.
After a challenging loss to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), the Turtles are determined to regain momentum in the Shopee Cup. Standing in their way is PSM Makassar, the current Group A leaders, who have been in stellar form, boasting two wins and a draw in their last three matches. With seven points, PSM Makassar has proven to be a formidable opponent in the competition.
Coach Badrul Afzan, speaking during a pre-match press conference, emphasized the importance of scoring early to set the tone of the game while cautioning against losing focus defensively.
“Preparations to face PSM Makassar are going well, even though we know they are the best team in the Shopee Cup at the moment,” said the 49-year-old coach. “We can’t take it easy. I have told the players to be ready for the important match tomorrow.”
Badrul stressed the need for balance between attack and defense, acknowledging the danger posed by PSM Makassar’s strong attacking unit.
“Of course, we plan to score early. So I want the players to be ready. Even though we aim to score, the defensive aspect needs to be more focused,” he added.
PSM Makassar’s strong run in the Shopee Cup has made them a team to beat. Arriving in Malaysia on the back of their impressive performances, the Indonesian side will be looking to extend their lead in Group A.
With two wins and one draw in their last three outings, PSM Makassar has showcased their ability to grind out results and maintain consistency. Terengganu’s defense will need to be at their sharpest to contain PSM’s attacking prowess.
With Group A standings and progression to the next round at stake, the match promises to be a thrilling encounter. Terengganu FC will rely on home support at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium to boost their performance and aim for a crucial win against a high-flying opponent.
