Malaysia University Football national team clinched the first victory after beating Philippines scoring 3-1 in the Asian University Football Championship 2024 Group Stage, Group A at UKM Stadium, Bangi.
Malaysia managed to penetrate the Philippine’s goal through Hausen Shwahiri Hasboni Shawal in the 27th minute.
The Philippines, however, equalized thanks to Edgar Aban’s blast in the 56th minute, but that position did not last long when Muhammad Khairil Mohd Zain put Malaysia back in front, six minutes later.
More interesting drama occurred at the end of the match, with goalkeeper Muhammad Asyraf Mohamad Fadhil saving a penalty kick in the 81st minute before Muhammad Darwisy Abdullah scored Malaysia’s third goal with four minutes left in the match, thus confirming the victory for Malaysia.
Harimau Siswa, however, face a tough task when they face the team of choice, South Korea in the last action of the group stage, tomorrow, while the Philippines face Oman.
Earlier, South Korea, who beat the Philippines 8-0, yesterday almost certainly emerged as the champion of Group A when they defeated Oman 5-3.
South Korea currently leads Group A with six points, while Malaysia and Oman share three points.
