Asian Games 2026: Malaysia Hockey Misses Gold Medal
Malaysia's long wait to return to the Olympic hockey stage will continue, after the Speedy Tigers fell 1-5 to India in the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 final at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium tonight.
The defeat means Malaysia once again missed the opportunity presented by the Asian Games platform to claim the title that carries automatic qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28), repeating the heartbreak of the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang edition, where the same opportunity slipped away.
Defending champions India made the stronger start, with captain Harmanpreet Singh opening the scoring through a penalty corner conversion in the 11th minute. Malaysia, however, responded swiftly, levelling the score just three minutes later through a powerful strike from Shello Silverius inside the shooting circle to make it 1-1.
Both sides raised the intensity following the equalizer, before Jugraj Singh put India back in front with a field goal in the 23rd minute, a lead the defending champions would not relinquish for the remainder of the match.
Heading into the third quarter, India continued to pile on the pressure, earning two penalty corners, one of which was upgraded to a penalty stroke. Hardik Singh made no mistake from the spot, converting in the 42nd minute to extend India's advantage to 3-1.
India maintained their grip on the match through the final quarter, with Shilanand Lakra adding a fourth goal in the 54th minute. Harmanpreet Singh then completed a brilliant personal performance with his second goal of the match three minutes later, sealing a commanding 5-1 victory and India's fifth Asian Games hockey title.
For the record, Malaysia have still never won Asian Games men's hockey gold, with the nation's best results remaining the silver medals from the 2010 Guangzhou edition, where they fell to Pakistan, and the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang edition, where they were beaten by Japan. Tonight's defeat adds a third final appearance without a title to that unwanted record.
The loss means Malaysia must now pursue an alternative route in their quest for an LA28 Olympic berth. The Speedy Tigers' last appearance on the Olympic stage came at the Sydney 2000 Games in Australia, meaning a return to the five-ring showcase remains as elusive as ever for Malaysian hockey following this latest final disappointment.
