Malaysia U16 national team has ended of the tournament in the group stage after losing to Thailand U16 national team scoring 1-3 in the ASEAN U16 Boys Championship 2024 Group Stage, Group C at Manahan Stadium, Solo.
The match began brightly for Malaysia, with Izzuddin Nazaruddin capitalizing on a mistake by Supawit Phasom to score in the 4th minute, giving Malaysia an early 1-0 lead.
Despite numerous attempts, Thailand struggled to break through Malaysia’s defense in the first half, which ended with Malaysia holding a 1-0 advantage.
The second half saw a significant turning point when Malaysia was reduced to ten men after Aisy Azri received a second yellow card, resulting in a red card. This disadvantage allowed Thailand to increase their pressure.
In the 59th minute, Thailand nearly equalized through Jomphon Hombunma, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Kanapot Inthasing.
However, Thailand eventually found their breakthrough in the 74th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Hombunma was fouled by the Malaysian goalkeeper. Hombunma converted the penalty to level the score at 1-1.
Just two minutes later, in the 76th minute, Siwakorn Phonsan put Thailand ahead 2-1 after his shot hit the post and rebounded off the Malaysian goalkeeper into the net.
Thailand extended their lead to 3-1 in the 89th minute when Poramet La-ongdee was fouled and then scored from the resulting penalty.
Despite a valiant effort, Malaysia was unable to score again, and the match ended with a 3-1 victory for Thailand. The win allowed Thailand to advance to the semi-finals as the runner-up with the best score.
