Aleix Espargaro Replace Joan Mir in IndonesianGP 2026
Honda HRC test rider Alex Espargaro will return to MotoGP action this weekend, stepping in for the injured Joan Mir at the Indonesian Grand Prix in Mandalika, scheduled for October 9-11.
The decision to recall Espargaro for the Lombok circuit stems from the unavailability of both originally considered replacement options for the Spaniard's seat, forcing Honda to turn once again to their experienced test rider to fill the void.
Takaaki Nakagami remains unavailable for selection, still recovering from a fractured collarbone that has kept him out of action in recent rounds. Meanwhile, Thai rider Somkiat Chantra, who collected three points at Motegi last weekend, finds himself unable to step into the breach due to a direct scheduling conflict — the rider is committed to competing in Round 11 of the 2026 WorldSBK season at Estoril, Portugal, which takes place the very same weekend as the Indonesian Grand Prix.
With both alternatives ruled out, Honda HRC turned to the proven reliability of Espargaro, who has previously filled in for injured riders across the 2026 season and brings valuable experience of stepping into race weekends at short notice.
