Malaysia women’s national football team closed their Tri-Nation Series campaign on a high note with a commanding 3-1 win over hosts Bhutan at Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu.
Under the guidance of Brazilian head coach Joel Cornelli, the Malayan Tigress bounced back in style after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Hong Kong in their opening match. With redemption on their minds, the team delivered a composed and clinical performance against Bhutan.
Malaysia’s starting XI was anchored by three experienced players: Azurin Mazlan in goal, Steffi Sarge marshalling the backline, and Intan Sarah leading the attacking charge.
However, it was Bhutan who struck first in the 25th minute through their pacey winger Yeshey Bidha, who beat the offside trap and calmly slotted the ball past Azurin Mazlan to put the hosts 1-0 ahead.
Malaysia didn’t take long to respond. Just four minutes later, the ever-dangerous Intan Sarah restored parity with a well-timed finish after latching onto a long ball from midfield.
As the first half approached its conclusion, Malaysia turned the tide. A blistering run down the right flank from Intan Sarah ended with a pinpoint cross, which was expertly converted by Ainsyah Murad, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead at the break.
Malaysia returned for the second half determined to control the tempo. Steffi Sarge led the defensive line with authority, repelling repeated threats from the spirited Bhutanese attack.
The home side came agonizingly close to equalizing twice midway through the half, only to be denied by the post and crossbar in two separate attempts.
As the clock ticked into injury time, Malaysia sealed the victory in style. Super-sub Farahiyah found herself in the right place at the right time to tap home the third goal, putting the result beyond doubt.
The match ended 3-1 in favor of Malaysia, a well-earned victory that not only highlighted the team’s resilience but also showcased the attacking firepower and defensive grit within the squad.
