It was a disappointing evening for Malaysia at the China Masters 2024, as all three Malaysian pairs were eliminated in the quarterfinals held at the Shenzhen Gymnasium.
The country’s top men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, ranked No. 5, fell to China’s He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu, the tournament’s third seeds. Despite their best efforts, the Malaysians lost in a grueling three-set match, 25-23, 17-21, 21-12. The Chinese pair capitalized on key moments in the deciding set, pulling away with a dominant performance.
In the women’s doubles, fifth-seeded Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah were defeated by China’s Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning, the second seeds, in straight sets 16-21, 17-21. Pearly and Thinaah struggled to match the pace and precision of their opponents, marking the end of their campaign.
The men’s doubles pair of Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, seeded seventh, suffered a heartbreaking loss to Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. The Malaysians won the opening set but could not hold on, losing 18-21, 21-19, 23-21 in a nail-biting decider that saw both pairs battling for every point.
With all three pairs exiting the tournament, Malaysia’s journey at the China Masters 2024 has come to an end. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, the players fell short in crucial moments against formidable opponents.
