Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei etched their names in the history books as the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to qualify for the final of the prestigious HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium, Hangzhou.
The world No. 8 duo delivered a stellar performance to defeat compatriots and world No. 10 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in straight sets, 21-15, 21-12, in a 42-minute semi-final clash in Hangzhou on Saturday (Dec 14).
The victory marked their second triumph over the independent pair in the tournament, having also emerged victorious during the group stage.
“It’s always not easy to play against fellow Malaysians as we know each other’s game play very well,” Ee Wei remarked in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
“Of course, they are our seniors, and there’s so much we can learn from them. But once we step onto the court, our focus is to give our best and fight hard,” she added.
The pair acknowledged the magnitude of their achievement but emphasized that their mission is far from over. “Our job is not done yet. We need to calm down and prepare ourselves for tomorrow’s match,” Ee Wei concluded.
Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei are now just one step away from claiming the biggest title of their careers. However, their final hurdle will be a formidable one, as they face either China’s Paris Olympics gold medallists Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong or world No. 2 Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin.
With their historic run and unwavering determination, the Malaysian duo has captured the hearts of fans and brought hope for another landmark victory. All eyes will now be on the final as they aim to bring glory to Malaysia on the world stage.
