Switzerland continued their impressive unbeaten run at the FIFA World Cup 2026, comfortably defeating Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 at BC Place Stadium, Vancouver.
The composed victory extended Schweizer Nati’s unbeaten record in the tournament since emerging from Group B and reaffirmed their status as one of Europe’s most consistent performers on the world stage.
Switzerland fielded a strong starting lineup featuring Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and captain Granit Xhaka, while Algeria relied on experienced winger Riyad Mahrez and goalkeeper Luca Zidane, the son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane.
The breakthrough arrived after just 10 minutes. A well-crafted attacking move saw Johan Manzambi deliver a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Breel Embolo, who made no mistake with a composed finish to hand Switzerland an early 1-0 advantage.
The opening goal settled Murat Yakin’s side, who controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout the remainder of the first half, limiting Algeria to few meaningful opportunities.
Switzerland wasted little time extending their lead after the restart.
Just one minute into the second half, star winger Dan Ndoye found the back of the net to make it 2-0, capitalising on Switzerland’s continued dominance and leaving Algeria with a mountain to climb.
The early second-half strike effectively put the match beyond reach as Switzerland maintained control with disciplined defending and intelligent ball circulation.
In search of a response, Algeria introduced attacking reinforcements, including Marseille forward Amine Gouiri and Feyenoord striker Anis Hadj, hoping to spark a comeback.
Despite the changes, El Khadra struggled to break through Switzerland’s organised defensive structure, with Kobel rarely being called into serious action.
Switzerland comfortably saw out the remaining stages of the match to preserve their clean sheet and secure another convincing World Cup victory.
The victory sees Switzerland reach the Round of 16 once again, matching their achievement from the previous World Cup before their campaign ended against Portugal in the knockout stage.
This time, the Swiss will be hoping to go one step further when they face the winner of the Colombia vs Ghana Round of 32 encounter on 8 July.
Having combined defensive solidity with clinical finishing, Switzerland continue to quietly build momentum and will head into the next phase of the tournament full of confidence as their World Cup journey continues.
