France sent a powerful message to the rest of the 2026 FIFA World Cup field after producing a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden to secure their place in the Round of 16, with captain Kylian Mbappé once again leading the charge in a complete attacking display.
Following the surprise eliminations of several European heavyweights earlier in the knockout stage, Didier Deschamps refused to underestimate Sweden. The French manager fielded his strongest available lineup, welcoming William Saliba back into defence while restoring the left-sided partnership of Lucas Digne and Bradley Barcola.
Sweden showed early intent by registering the game’s first shot after just three minutes, but France quickly settled into their familiar rhythm, dominating possession and patiently probing for openings.
Lucas Digne sparked the first real danger before Mbappé and Barcola both threatened in quick succession as Les Bleus steadily tightened their grip on the contest.
France thought they had taken the lead in the 20th minute when Michael Olise released Mbappé through on goal. The Real Madrid superstar finished calmly beyond the goalkeeper, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Mbappé continued to torment the Swedish defence and struck the post just after the half-hour mark following Jules Koundé’s cut-back, while Olise nearly produced one of the goals of the tournament with a spectacular overhead kick that also crashed against the woodwork.
France’s relentless pressure was finally rewarded on the stroke of half-time.
After a quickly taken corner, Mbappé collected possession and unleashed a powerful drive that beat goalkeeper Widell Zetterström to hand Les Bleus a deserved 1-0 advantage in the 45th minute.
The goal carried extra emotion as the entire French squad celebrated with head coach Didier Deschamps, who recently returned to the team following the passing of his mother.
The strike also saw Mbappé become the outright record-holder for the most goals scored in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage matches.
France resumed the second half with confidence and doubled their lead in the 53rd minute.
Olise, who has been one of the tournament’s standout creators, delivered another inch-perfect assist for Barcola, who made no mistake with the finish to make it 2-0.
The Bayern Munich playmaker continued his masterclass by supplying another perfectly weighted pass for Mbappé in the 74th minute. France’s captain clinically dispatched the opportunity to complete his brace and move back to the top of the tournament’s scoring charts.
France comfortably managed the closing stages to record their fourth consecutive victory of the tournament and further strengthen their credentials as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
The comprehensive win sends Les Bleus into the Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay on Saturday after the South Americans stunned Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout.
With Mbappé in prolific form and Olise orchestrating attacks with remarkable vision, France appear to be gathering momentum at exactly the right moment as their quest for a third FIFA World Cup title continues.
