Thailand’s world No. 2 Kunlavut Vitidsarn etched his name into the history books after capturing his first-ever BWF World Tour Super 1000 title at the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2026 at Aziata Arena, Kuala Lumpur.
The breakthrough triumph came in dramatic fashion at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, after world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi of China was forced to retire from the men’s singles final due to a left shoulder injury.
Kunlavut, fondly known as “View”, had already taken a tight first game 23-21 before asserting full control in the second game, where he raced to a 6-1 lead. Moments later, the Chinese star signalled his inability to continue, bringing the final to a premature end.
Despite the unfortunate ending, the title marked a career-defining milestone for the 23-year-old, who has long been regarded as one of the most technically gifted players on the circuit but had yet to taste success at the prestigious Super 1000 level.
The Malaysia Open crown not only confirms Kunlavut’s rise as a genuine powerhouse in men’s singles but also signals a potential shift in the balance of power at the very top of the world rankings.
