Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, are expected to make a crucial decision on their contract renewal with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) by the end of next week, amid mounting speculation that the duo may leave the national setup to pursue an independent career.
The pair, who have yet to sign fresh terms with BAM, are now at the centre of attention as uncertainty surrounds their future just weeks before a demanding run of international tournaments. Their current status has sparked discussion in badminton circles, with the possibility of them turning independent seen as a significant shift in the national badminton landscape.
Speaking to the media, BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh confirmed that negotiations are ongoing and a resolution is expected soon.
“Pearly and Thinaah have not signed new contracts, but we expect the matter to be resolved within the next two weeks,” said Kenny.
“They have a packed schedule coming up, so we’re giving them space and time to make the right decision.”
The world No. 1 national duo are preparing for a grueling four-tournament stretch, beginning with the Thailand Open (May 13-18), followed by the Malaysian Masters (May 20-25), Singapore Open (May 27-June 1), and Indonesian Open (June 3-8). With the clock ticking, clarity on their status is essential not only for team preparations but also for long-term planning leading up to major events like the 2025 World Championships and the 2028 Olympics cycle.
If Pearly-Thinaah opt to go independent, they would join the growing list of elite Malaysian shuttlers who have left the national body in pursuit of greater autonomy and flexibility in their careers.
For now, all eyes remain on the BAM and the decorated duo as the nation awaits an official announcement.
