The roars of MotoGP engines will be joined by a familiar force this weekend as Takaaki Nakagami makes his highly anticipated return to racing at the Michelin Grand Prix of France 2025, suiting up for the Honda HRC Test Team in their second consecutive wildcard entry of the 2025 season.
The 33-year-old Japanese rider, who spent seven full seasons competing in MotoGP from 2018 to 2024, transitioned into a crucial development role with Honda HRC this year. Now, armed with the insights of countless laps in private testing, Nakagami is back to do battle — and he’s doing it at a circuit where he has a proven record.
Nakagami’s return follows the footsteps of Aleix Espargaro, who raced as a wildcard at the Spanish GP. For Honda, this move continues to strategically capitalize on MotoGP’s 2025 concession rules, which allow for expanded testing and wildcard opportunities in a bid to close the performance gap.
At the recent Jerez Test, Nakagami clocked 62 laps as part of Honda’s focused effort to fast-track development. Now, the #30 rider steps into the limelight again, ready to race at Le Mans – a track where he has finished in the top 10 four times during his MotoGP career.
This wildcard entry isn’t just symbolic. It’s part of Honda’s renewed commitment to competitiveness, using experienced hands like Nakagami to provide real-time race feedback directly from the grid. For Nakagami, it’s a chance to contribute more than data — it’s about pride, performance, and the thrill of racing once again.
All eyes now turn to Le Mans, where Nakagami will ride under the spotlight of a sellout French crowd as he returns to the premier class — not just as a test rider, but as a serious competitor.
