Max Verstappen roared back into form with a commanding performance to win the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix, securing his first victory of the season and fourth consecutive triumph at the iconic Suzuka Circuit.
The reigning World Champion held off intense pressure from McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in a dramatic, high-stakes race that had everything: wheel-to-wheel battles, pit lane drama, strategy gambles, and a rising tide of young talent proving their mettle.
After storming to a surprise pole in Saturday’s qualifying, Verstappen executed a flawless launch when the five lights went out. Despite reporting early gearbox issues and facing fierce competition from the fast-charging McLarens, the Dutchman remained unflappable. A slightly slow pit stop in the mid-race phase nearly cost him, with Norris emerging side-by-side at the pit exit before being forced onto the grass in a heart-pounding moment. The stewards opted against an investigation, and Verstappen resumed the lead with composure.
“It got close, but we kept it clean and brought it home,” Verstappen said post-race. “The team gave me a great car. It feels amazing to get the season truly underway.”
The win marks Verstappen’s 64th career Grand Prix victory, and with it, he closes the gap to just one point behind Norris in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship standings.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri once again showcased McLaren’s serious title credentials. Norris, who had held Verstappen within striking range for much of the race, looked to mount a final assault in the closing laps but couldn’t quite break through. Meanwhile, Piastri, celebrating his 24th birthday, hounded his teammate late in the race but was forced to settle for a podium in third.
“Cheeky defending from Lando,” Piastri joked over team radio, highlighting the close yet respectful battle between the McLaren teammates.
On his Red Bull Racing debut, Yuki Tsunoda finished 12th, narrowly missing out on points in front of an adoring home crowd. Nevertheless, his aggression and determination earned him the Driver of the Day award from fans worldwide — a touching tribute for the Japanese driver in his first full-time outing with a title-contending team.
