Vietnam national team keep advantage in the first match after beating Singapore national team scoring 2-0 in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 semi-final first leg at Jalan Besar Stadium, Kallang.
Singapore entered the knockout phase as runners-up from Group A, while Vietnam advanced as Group B champions. Despite the home advantage, the Lions struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, allowing Vietnam to take control late in the match.
The first half ended goalless, with Singapore dominating possession but failing to convert their chances. Shawal Anuar spearheaded Singapore’s attack, but Vietnam’s resolute defense kept the hosts at bay.
The second half saw Vietnam increase the intensity, launching multiple attacks on Singapore’s defense. However, the Lions held firm, maintaining a clean sheet until the final minutes of regular time.
Vietnam appeared to break the deadlock in the 86th minute when they found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed due to a handball, leaving the visitors frustrated.
In added time, Vietnam finally broke through. A penalty was awarded after a foul in the box, and Nguyen Tien Linh calmly converted, putting Vietnam ahead in the 91st minute.
Just moments later, Vietnamese striker Rafaelson sealed the victory with a towering header that left Singapore goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud with no chance.
With a 2-0 aggregate advantage, Vietnam will return home to Hanoi for the second leg at Viet Tri Stadium, Phu Tho on Sunday, 29 December 2024. Singapore faces an uphill battle as they aim to overturn the deficit and secure a spot in the final.
