Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has taken another major step in reinforcing its national high-performance structure after confirming the appointment of three new coaches to boost the country’s player development pipeline.
In an official announcement, BAM named:
- Harry Hartono as Men’s Singles Coach
- Yeoh Kay Bin as Junior Men’s Singles Coach
- Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif as Women’s Doubles Coach
The appointments are part of BAM’s wider strategic push to strengthen the national coaching ecosystem, with a holistic emphasis on technical, tactical, physical, and mental development across all levels.
Hartono and Kay Bin will play key roles in guiding Malaysia’s men’s singles programme, working closely with Datuk Tey Seu Bock (Head Coach), K. Yogendran, Alvin Chew, Goh Giap Chin.
The move comes as BAM continues searching for greater consistency in men’s singles, especially as Malaysia looks to build depth behind established stars such as Lee Zii Jia and emerging talents on the junior circuit.
BAM Performance Committee Chairman Dato’ Seri Dr. Lee Chong Wei expressed confidence that the trio’s expertise will provide significant value to Malaysia’s training programme.
“We discussed this with Singles Director, Kenneth Jonassen, and he submitted a list of coaching candidates, with a focus on continuity for young players,” Chong Wei said.
“Both of us are former players and understand the needs of coaches, and he also provided his views on the most suitable roles for these coaches.”
In the doubles structure led by Director Rexy Mainaky, Zakry will strengthen the women’s doubles coaching unit alongside Rosman Razak (Head Coach), Ching Kai Feng, Amelia Anscelly
Chong Wei revealed that Rexy personally proposed Zakry as a key candidate, highlighting BAM’s intention to sharpen Malaysia’s women’s doubles competitiveness on the World Tour.
Beyond technical upgrades, Chong Wei stressed that unity within the coaching structure remains BAM’s top priority.
“Most importantly, all coaches — senior and junior — must be able to work together. I always say that we are one family and must work collectively.
“I do not want a situation where someone says, ‘I only take care of my own players’. We need to look after everyone together and discuss solutions to any problems.”
All three coaches will begin their new roles in stages next month:
- Yeoh Kay Bin – reports 3 February
- Harry Hartono – reports 10 February
- Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif – reports 20 February
