Johor Darul Ta’zim has made a major move by signing former English Premier League (EPL) midfielder Roque Mesa.
The Southern Tigers announced the arrival of the 35-year-old Spanish playmaker via their Johor Southern Tigers platform.
“Red and Blue are not just colours, they are a legacy. Welcome to the Southern Tigers, Roque Mesa,” read the club’s statement, signaling high hopes for the experienced midfielder.
Mesa’s transfer reunites him with Jordi Amat, his former Swansea City teammate, where the duo played during the 2017-2018 EPL season. Mesa’s career has also seen stints with top Spanish sides, including Sevilla, Sporting Gijon, CD Leganes, Las Palmas, Valladolid, and Levante.
Mesa becomes the third high-profile addition to JDT this year, following the signings of Jonathan Viera and Alvaro Gonzalez. His first experience playing for an Asian club presents an exciting challenge for the veteran midfielder, who is expected to enhance JDT’s midfield depth and creativity.
All three Spanish stars are set to bolster the Southern Tigers’ campaign in the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE).
Currently in a favorable position to advance, JDT is gearing up for two crucial ACLE matches. The first is a highly anticipated fixture against the reigning A-League champions, Central Coast Mariners, on February 11.
