Two-time Olympic gold medalist Viktor Axelsen has proposed a game-changing idea for the world of badminton: extending major tournaments, such as the prestigious All England Open, from the current seven-day format to eight or even ten days.
Axelsen believes this shift would not only benefit the players but also enhance fan engagement and media coverage. The idea was inspired by the US Open 2025, which will run for 15 days, starting on a Sunday for the first time in its history.
In a social media post, Axelsen shared his thoughts:
“Cool. All England and the other Super 1000’s could be 10-day+ events. Give the players 1-2 more rest days, more time to hype the matches, and more chances for media/fans to communicate with the players.”
The Danish superstar emphasized how crucial proper rest is for peak player performance and injury prevention. Longer tournament schedules would also provide more opportunities for meaningful interactions between players and fans, as well as increased media visibility.
