Penang FC emerged semi-finalist post after beating Putrajaya Athletic FC scoring 2-0 in the MFL Challenge Cup 2024/25 Quarter-Final second leg at Stadium Bandaraya, Pulau Pinang.
Team captain Rafael Vitor was the standout performer, scoring both goals for Penang FC from the penalty spot in the first half.
The first penalty came in the 38th minute after Abdul Latiff Suhaimi fouled Dylan Wenzel-Halls inside the box. Vitor calmly converted the spot kick to give the hosts the lead.
Just before the halftime whistle, Putrajaya Athletic’s woes deepened as they conceded another penalty. This time, Che Mohamad Arif brought down Wenzel-Halls, and Vitor stepped up again to score his second goal in injury time, extending Penang’s lead to 2-0.
In the second half, Penang continued to press for more goals. Striker Nabil Latpi came close to adding a third with a powerful left-footed shot, but Putrajaya goalkeeper Syakir Danial Ma’amal Hajri made a fine save to deny him.
Despite their efforts, Putrajaya Athletic FC struggled to break down Penang’s defense. Their offensive attempts were thwarted by a solid defensive line and an organized performance from Nazrulerwan Makmor’s men.
This match marked the end of Putrajaya Athletic’s inaugural Challenge Cup campaign. Despite their determination, they were outclassed by a well-drilled Penang side and will look to rebuild for future tournaments.
With this victory, Penang FC advance to the semi-finals, showcasing their strength and determination in the tournament. Their clinical finishing, defensive resilience, and tactical discipline make them one of the teams to watch as the competition progresses.
